Drills, skills and strategy needed in winning Table Tennis matches

Drills, skills and strategy – preferable in this order - are the required disciplines in winning any match. For this article, the sport in focus is table tennis and it is good to start off with drills for service. Service can win matches in table tennis for as long as you keep hitting good serves and your opponent cannot make a legal return then you keep scoring. It is essential then that service practice should be a part of the daily drills of a table tennis player.

The drills last for hours and at least two hours should be devoted to practicing service. During the service drill, a player can vary the height of the serve as well as the placements and speeds. Once a player masters the art of serving then he is halfway to winning the match.

Drills should also include basic forehand and backhand drills. Forehand and backhand are the usual strokes in making legal returns so a player should experiment with these two strokes and see what works best for him and what will suit him best versus the skills of his future opponents. Apart from the drills, stretching should also be a part of the drills to prepare the muscles for a rigorous game ahead.

The skills that you need in table tennis include agility and quickness among others. To develop agility, a player can do some of these exercises: jogging, push-ups, sit-ups and squats. For quickness, laps around the table can do some help since it is the same area where the player will be running around during the match. The laps around the table build familiarity of the play area. The skill in doing chops should also be developed to make deadly legal returns and the only way to do this is to practice.

Table tennis is also a mind game so a player should also be mentally capable to take on his opponent and to be mentally prepared at all times. With this, the aspect of strategy comes in. The best strategy is to look after your side of the court and to study your opponent’s weaknesses and take advantage of these weaknesses. Strategy involves research like watching your opponent’s games against another player and as well as watching your matches so you can learn from mistakes and improve your game.

If a player takes seriously his drills, work on his skills, develop his strategy then winning won’t be a problem. In winning though it is important to keep in mind that winning is not always a victory and losing is not always a defeat either. This means that when you win, you have to stay humble knowing that there would still be more opponents to come. And in an event where you lose, you should not bow down in shame. After losing, accept the result and vow to practice some more and do better next time.

In sports, there will always be a winner and a loser. As a player you would always want to be the winner but it will never be that easy. A player should work hard to keep on winning. Hopefully this article will be of help to table tennis players who want to keep a winning a streak and even for those who want to start a winning streak.
